I'm gratified to discover that these objects are not popular as still life models. This goes to the heart of my intention to paint portraits of objects. I strive to incorporate a sense of dynamism into my subject matter choices. My subject models must imply something beyond mere static display. The old flowers in vase or fruit in bowl thing just doesn't make the cut. I'm more into the car keys in the ignition, the power tools on the workbench, the chess pieces on the board, the rings on the fingers, the shuriken lodged in the board.

The coiled spring-loaded grip exercisers more than qualify as dynamic objects. The tension is undeniable, and the sculpted finger grips literally cry out for a grasping hand. These are much removed from the typical still life arrangement. I'm trying to breathe a little more life into the concept of still life.
As per the Hypermodern Realism precept that the artist's subject matter ought to be personal, this equipment is mine. My freeweights regimen includes several martial arts and yoga exercises. The shotputs are used for resistance during flailing hand movements in the martial arts sets. They are difficult to hold firmly in one's grasp when in motion. In application this translates into having a solid grip on one's opponent or his apparel. |
