This painting evolved from a photograph that I snapped in 1977 as I was walking past a 1949 Cadillac. I wanted to paint the hood ornament but at the time it was just another idea about what I might do in the future. As I began work on this piece in 2004, I was asked to chronicle my progress with a series of photographs. The idea would be to create an amusing animated GIF that would take the viewer through the work's progress from start to finish.
Since a periodic photo session would be added to my production schedule, I decided to produce a full-scale photo essay. Normally, I take photos only after finishing a work and these include a few close-up shots to display detail. I thought that it might interest some readers, other artists in particular, to see interval shots of some of the detail areas as well. This decision meant ten times as many photo sessions and ten times as many photos as I might take under usual circumstances. And that, in turn, means that this page will not have the usual commentary that appears below all the other painting images in this site. To read more about this painting, and to learn more about my glaze layering work process than you ever wanted to know, see my photo essay: CHRONOLOGY OF AN OIL PAINTING For those content to examine some typical detail close-ups of the painting, here follow a few exerpts from the essay. |
